U.S. Universities Warn International Students to Return for Spring Term before Trump Takes Charge in January 2025

Published on : November 28, 2024

Higher education institutions in the United States of America are preparing for a shift in U.S. immigration policies under President-elect Donald Trump.

An increasing number of U.S. universities and colleges with a large number of international students have started to issue immigration guidance. This is being done in the background of President-elect Donald Trump coming to power in January 2025.

Prestigious colleges - like the Wesleyan University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst - have begun advising foreign students to return to campus for the Spring Term prior to Trump coming to office. The swearing in for the new President of the United States is scheduled for January 20, 2025.

Other well-known universities - including the New York University (NYU), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Yale University - have sent guidance to international students. The universities are instructing foreign students on how to prepare for the transition. They are also bolstering the required resources to aid the students.

In his previous term, Donald Trump had advocated drastic measures that could have weakened the visa programs, like US Study visas, on which many foreigners rely. Various policy experts are expecting similar upheavals during the upcoming second term as well.

During his first White House term, Trump restricted U.S. visa programs. Days after assuming office in 2017, US entry was banned for specific individuals from certain countries. The order had led to hurdles for some academics and students to return to the US. However, the first version of the policy was subsequently struck down by the U.S. courts.

The second time around, U.S. educational institutions are bracing for any similar announcements and other policy shifts. They are warning their students to be prepared accordingly.

In this regard, the Office of Global Affairs of UMass Amherst has urged its foreign students to return to the United States before January 20, 2025. The advisory has been issued in view of the chance of any new policies being enacted on the first day of Trump’s second term. The guidance is being issued out of caution for avoiding any potential travel disruption.

The measure is precautionary in nature and not based on any University/college mandate or government policy/recommendation. The U.S. educational institutions are preparing for any travel bans in the near future which might impact foreign students returning to their campuses. As of now, there is no indication as to whether a similar ban will be imposed. Moreover, if imposed, it is not clear which countries or class of temporary residents might be affected.

Those on a U.S. Student F1 visa are advised to avoid difficulty in re-entering the U.S. by ensuring that they are physically present in the U.S. on January 19, 2025. This is being proposed as the safest way to avoid any subsequent travel ban and uncertainties surrounding immigration-related policy changes by the President-elect Donald Trump.

According to a peer-reviewed research, in Trump’s previous presidential term, 12% fewer foreign students studied in the U.S. compared to the other top study abroad destinations for international students.

A reduction in the number of international students will have a huge impact on the educational institutions in the U.S. International students pay a comparatively much higher tuition fees when compared to the local population.

The U.S. remains a top study abroad destination for students from India. The 2023 Open Doors Report - a comprehensive information resource on international students in the U.S. featuring data tables, graphic displays, and policy-oriented analyses - was released on November 13, 2023.

2023 Open Doors Report key findings -

  • The U.S. hosted an all-time high of more than 1.1 million international students
  • India is the top source country for US Student visa applicants for the first time since 2009
  • International student numbers rose across 44 U.S. states and territories
  • 8 of the top 25 places of origin reached all-time highs
  • A majority of international students pursued STEM fields
  • International students and international graduate students on OPT reached record highs

The U.S. is a top destination for studying overseas for many students from across the world. There are expectations of U.S. immigration or policy changes after Trump assume office for the second time on January 20, 2025. However, there are only speculations as of now. The U.S. universities and colleges are issuing advisories to prepare students for any changes that might affect their visa status or U.S. stay.
