Vienna rebounded to the first place - a position that the city held in 2018 and 2019 - followed by a drop to #12 in the 2021 rankings. A developed infrastructure, stability, good healthcare, and a wide range of opportunities for culture and entertainment are the main charms that Vienna holds for its inhabitants.

EIU’s Liveability Index 2022 is based on a survey conducted between February 14 and March 13, 2022. Cities in Western Europe and Canada dominate the top of the rankings. A high COVID-19 vaccination rate and the easing of pandemic-related restrictions have led to life being almost back to normal in these cities.

33 new cities have been added to the latest EIU rankings for the most liveable cities in the world, bringing the total number of cities to 172 (excluding Kiev, Russia).

Which Canadian cities are the most liveable in the world?

EIU’s Global Liveability Index 2022 features three Canadian cities in the Top 10. These are -

  • Calgary (tied at #3)
  • Vancouver (#5)
  • Toronto (#8)

Canada is the only country in the world to have three cities in the Top 10 most liveable cities in the world.

Calgary

A city in Alberta province of Canada, Calgary is a relatively young Canadian city. Enjoying more days of sunshine (around 333 days in a year) than any other major city in Canada, Calgary offers an experience of a lifetime to all.

You can immigrate to Calgary through - the Express Entry System, Alberta’s Provincial Nominee Program (also referred to as Alberta PNP), etc.

Vancouver

Located in the province of British Columbia, Vancouver is among the metropolitan regions in Canada with the highest population. Vancouver is the business capital of British Columbia. A major north transshipment port, many cruise ships and an enormous amount of container traffic can be seen at Vancouver.

You can immigrate to Vancouver through - the Express Entry system, British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (also referred to as British Columbia PNP) etc.

Toronto

The capital of Ontario province, Toronto is truly multicultural to the core. Toronto is the commercial and financial centre of Canada. Centrally-located and with favorable international trade policies, Toronto has great economic ties to the United States.

You can immigrate to Toronto through - the Express Entry System, Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (also referred to as Ontario PNP) etc.

How are cities ranked on Global Liveability Index 2022?

The concept of liveability assesses locations around the world based on the living conditions provided therein. Each city on the Global Liveability Index 2022 is rated based on 30 factors across five broad categories -

  • Category 1: Stability
  • Category 2: Healthcare
  • Category 3: Culture & Environment
  • Category 4: Education
  • Category 5: Infrastructure

Each of the individual factors under the different categories are rated as - acceptable, tolerable, uncomfortable, undesirable, or intolerable. Scores are allotted and then compiled and weighted to get a score in the range 1 to 100, where 1 is intolerable and 100 is ideal.

The higher the score that a city has on the Global Liveability Index 2022, the more liveable it is. Taking the top spot, Vienna in Austria secured 99.1. Calgary (tied at #3) secured a score of 96.3, followed by Vancouver (at #5) with 96.1, and Toronto (at #8) with a score of 95.4/100.
