In a diplomatic thaw, India has reopened its e-visa services for Canadian citizens, effective from November 22, 2023. Last month, India reinstated visa services for various categories, including entry, business, medical, and conference visas.
Background
The temporary suspension of visa services was due to challenging conditions in Canada, hindering Indian diplomats from conducting necessary work for visa assessments. As the situation improved, the resumption of visa services became feasible, initially in physical forms and now extending to e-visas.
E-Visa Facility Reinstated
The Indian High Commission in Ottawa announced the restoration of the e-visa facility for all eligible Canadian citizens, marking a positive step in diplomatic relations.
Minister’s Perspective
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar explained, “The situation in Canada made it difficult for our diplomats to go to the office and do the necessary work for assessing visa. As the situation has become more secure, we have found it possible for visa services to progressively resume”.
Tourism Outlook
Rajiv Mehra, President of the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), anticipates a boost in inbound tourism. He stated, “Opening visas for Canada, one of the largest source markets, will be a booster shot for inbound tourism. Hopefully, by January, tourist flow from Canada will begin."
