India Joins Australia’s Work and Holiday Visa Program

Australia, on 1 October 2024, launched the Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visa for Indian citizens, offering a unique opportunity for young Indians to live, work, and study in Australia for up to a year.

This new program allows 1,000 Indian passport holders between the ages of 18 and 30 to experience Australia while working short-term jobs or pursuing short-term studies.

India officially joined the Working Holiday Maker program on 16 September 2024, becoming the 50th country to participate in this initiative. As part of the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), this visa aims to strengthen cultural ties and promote youth exchange between the two nations.

New Ballot System for Fair Selection

A ballot system (lottery-style) will be used to select eligible applicants from high-demand countries, including India. Indian citizens can register between 1 October and 31 October 2024. Successful applicants will be selected between 14 October 2024 and 30 April 2025, and they will have 28 days to submit their visa applications after receiving the invitation.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be aged 18 to 30.
  • They should hold a post-secondary diploma or graduate qualification.
  • A valid Indian passport and PAN card are required.
  • There is a registration fee of AUD 25.

Important Dates to Remember

  • Ballot Registration: 1 October 2024 – 31 October 2024
  • Ballot Selection: 14 October 2024 – 30 April 2025
  • Visa Application Submission: Within 28 days of receiving an invitation.
