Altogether 28 German visa categories can be applied for online, across all 167 German missions worldwide.

The change marks a significant change from the previous paper-based application process to a fully digital and streamlined online process.

With the digital overhaul, the German Government seeks to attract international talent while doing away with -

  • Paper applications, and
  • Processing delays.

According to the German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, “Every year, Germany is short of at least 400,000 skilled workers”. There is a global competition for attracting international students, apprentices, and trainees to sustain the national economy.

The Minister is of the opinion that, “At times like these, as one of the biggest economies and as a modern country of immigration, we need a national visa process that is state-of-the-art – modern, digital and secure.”

The structural reform is comprehensive and has entirely revamped the old visa process for Germany. With the update, Germany’s position as a business location will be further strengthened.
