Empowering the Future: UK Government's £ 118 Million Investment in AI and Data Science Education

Supporting International Students and Researchers in the Field

The UK government has unveiled a substantial £118 Million initiative to enhance training and development in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This program aims to nurture AI research and expertise within the country.

Grants and scholarships for international students and researchers -

1. AI Futures Grants Scheme: In 2024, the UK will introduce a £1 Million AI Futures Grants Scheme, which will help AI researchers from around the world relocate to the UK to work in universities and businesses.

2. GREAT Scholarships: The British Council and UK universities are funding 15 new GREAT scholarships for international students to pursue science and technology courses in the UK. Students can receive up to £10,000 in financial support. India is one of the 15 beneficiaries of this scholarship.

3. UK Research and Innovation Centres: The government is establishing 12 UK Research and Innovation centres for doctoral training in AI. These Centres will focus on critical areas such as healthcare and productivity improvement in the National Health Service (NHS). Participating institutions include the -

  • University of Surrey
  • University of Oxford
  • University of Manchester
  • Imperial College London
  • University of Edinburgh

4. Backing Invisible Genius (BIG) Scholarship Pilot: This initiative is designed to support high school students who excel in International Science Olympiads. It offers them opportunities to study science or technology courses in the UK. The pilot is led by Global Talent Lab (GTL) in partnership with the Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology, with universities like Imperial College London and the University of Cambridge participating.

A dedicated visa scheme will be introduced to encourage AI researchers to come to the UK for internships and placements to further their careers and contribute to the country’s AI industry.

This comprehensive package builds upon the existing £8.1 million in scholarships for postgraduate studies in AI and data science.

The initiative is a significant step forward in strengthening the UK’s position in AI and data science education, attracting international talent, and fostering innovation.
