Canada will soon be increasing the length of stay for the Super Visa for parents and grandparents of Canadian permanent residents and the citizens of Canada. Each year, around 17,000 Super Visas are issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
As per an official News Release dated June 7, 2022, Canada will soon be enhancing the Canadian Super Visa program for reuniting families “more easily and for longer”.
Effective July 4, 2022, the changes recently announced in the Canada Super Visa will make it easier for Canadians - citizens and permanent residents - to reunite with their parents and grandparents in Canada. Super Visa holders will be able to stay in Canada for a longer time per visit.
With the coming into force of the changes, international medical insurance companies can be designated by IRCC to provide coverage for Canada Super Visa applicants.

As of now, a stay of 2 years per entry is allowed and only Canadian insurance providers can give medical coverage. |
How is a Canada Super visa better than a multiple-entry Canada visitor visa? |
You can stay longer in Canada on a Canada Super Visa. With the upcoming changes, you can stay in Canada for up to 5 years per entry within a 10 year period. The length of stay on a multiple-entry visitor visa is usually 6 months or less. |
By making the Canada Super Visa more accessible, Canada continues to uphold the commitment to keeping families together. The Government of Canada continues to prioritize family reunification as Canada works towards recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Minister of Public Safety Marco E. L. Mendicino, “Reuniting families is a priority for our Government and contributes to our success and strength as a country—particularly, as we work to recover from the pandemic and reconnect with our loved ones.”
By prioritizing daily reunification, Canada aims to attract, retain, as well as integrate immigrants that can make a contribution to the success of the country. The 2021 Annual Report to Parliament on Immigration contains in a message by Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Sean Fraser, “We have long recognized that immigration provides essential contributions to Canada’s culture, economy, and population growth”.
