Canada Work Permit For International Students

Canada Open Work Permit: PGWP to Relax Extension Policies from 27th January 2021

Published on : January 27, 2021

Key Highlights:

  • What is the PGWP?
  • Latest Update
  • Eligibility Criteria
  • Apply for PGWP

One of the most substantial benefits of studying in Canada is the Post Graduate Work Permit. The PGWP allows International students to look for a job and even work with a permit to help them transition into Temporary or Permanent residents of Canada

Not just beneficial to students, but PGWP is an excellent help to employers as well. Since Canada’s conventional hiring process is lengthy and time-consuming, employers can skip the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) and hire the employees directly with the help of the Open Work Permit.

So, what is the new PGWP update about?

Starting 27th January, international students with expired PGWP or candidates nearing the end of their Open Work Permit validity can now apply for a new open work permit valid for 18 months.

Eligibility Criteria

To apply for this new Open Work Permit, you must:

  • Own a PGWP that expired on or after January 30, 2020, or
  • have a PGWP that expires in the next 4 months or less from the date of application
  • Be physically present in Canada
  • have a valid temporary status or be applying to restore your status
