How many types of Express Entry draws?

IRCC holds 3 different types of Express Entry draws -

  • General
  • Program-specific
  • Category-based

What is Express Entry category-based selection?

A category-based draw is when candidates from a particular category are targeted. The categories have been pre-determined and selected to fulfill a particular economic goal in Canada.

Under EE category-based selection, candidates are invited to apply for Canadian permanent residency based on criteria like language proficiency in an official language, work experience in a particular occupation, and education.

There are 6 categories -

  1. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations
  2. Agriculture and agri-food occupations
  3. French-language proficiency
  4. Healthcare occupations
  5. Trade occupations
  6. Transport occupations

What is the Express Entry category-based selection process?

The basic stepwise process is as follows -

  • Step 1 Show your interest. Create an Express Entry profile online.
  • Step 2 Enter the pool of EE candidates. This is where your profile is put under the pool of candidates based on your eligibility for a specific Express Entry program (FSWP, CEC, or PNP).
  • Step 3 Check CRS. Once you are in the pool, you will be allotted a score based on your points in the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).
  • Step 4 Identified based on category eligibility. Here, you will be identified if you are eligible for any of the 6 categories.
  • Step 5 Ranking. Eligible candidates are ranked based on their CRS scores.
  • Step 6 Express Entry draw. You will be invited if you are eligible for the selected category for that draw, provided you meet the minimum score requirement.
  • Step 7 Submit PR application. If you are issued an ITA by IRCC, you will be given 60 days to submit your complete PR application.
  • Step 8 Decision on your application. You will get a decision from IRCC on your Canada PR application.

Work experience in a specific occupation can increase your chances of getting Canada PR by Express Entry. For more information, book a free consultation today.
