According to the official announcement, the 2024-26 Immigration Levels Plan “prioritizes economic growth, and supports family reunification, while responding to humanitarian crises and recognizing the rapid growth in immigration in recent years”.
Immigrants have an important role to play in the Canadian labour market. Growing the Canadian economy now and into the future also requires the contribution of immigrants. Canadian immigration ensures that Canada has the required skills to meet key goals and fill labour force gaps in critical sectors of STEM, healthcare, etc.).
While family support is important for newcomers, dependents provide an economic benefit as well by joining the workforce. Additionally, parents and grandparents often take up the responsibility of child care, allowing their sponsors to enter or remain a part of the Canadian workforce.
With the announcement of the immigration levels plan for the next three years, Canada hopes to stabilize immigration, targeting a plateau in immigration targets of 500,000 per year by 2026.
