Australia’s New Skills in Demand Visa to Replace TSS 482 Visa

On December 7, 2024, the new Australian Skills in Demand visa will replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa. The announcement was made by the Australian government in a recent update. It was related to the release of a new core skills occupation list to target the skills Australia needs.

The recently announced Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) of Australia will apply to -

• The Core Skills Stream of the Skills in Demand, and
• The Direct Entry Stream of the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186).

The CSOL was released by the Australian government on December 3, 2024.

What is Australia’s new Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)?

The new CSOL fulfills Australia’s commitment to update occupations which are -

• Not flexible,
• Complex, and

The CSOL is a consolidated list containing all 456 occupations available in the Australian labour market.

The Australian Migration Strategy announced in December 2023 outlined policy commitments and key actions for an overhaul of the migration system of Australia. While more details are awaited, the existing TSS 482 visa will be replaced by the new Skills in Demand visa. There will also be various structural changes to adapt the TSS route to the new Skills in Demand pathway. TSS is among the popular visa routes for Indians to work in Australia.

The upcoming changes in Australian migration include the introduction of 3 new visa streams -

• Core Skills stream,
• Essential Skills stream, and
• Core Skills stream.

The new Australia visa system is expected to -

• Better target demand occupations,
• Streamline pathways to Australian permanent residency, and
• Simplify the visa application process.
