Alberta typically issues around 6,000 to 7,000 nominations annually through its various streams, including the Alberta Express Entry Stream and the Alberta Opportunity Stream.
Over 6,000 newcomers move to Alberta each year through the AAIP, contributing to the province's population growth and economic development.
The AAIP is designed to address labour shortages in specific sectors of Alberta's economy, including industries like oil and gas, agriculture, forestry, and technology.
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) facilitates economic immigration by selecting individuals who can contribute to Alberta’s workforce or who plan to establish a business in the province. This program is focused on addressing specific labor shortages. Also it ensures that nominees can financially support their families in Alberta.
The AAIP is administered jointly by the Alberta provincial government and the Canadian federal government. Nominated Individuals become eligible to apply for permanent residency. It includes their spouse or common-law partner and dependent children.
The processing of permanent residency applications is managed by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Hence, it has the final say on approval decisions. Originally known as the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program (AINP), the program was renamed to the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) on February 16, 2022.
The program streams are divided into two broad categories:
There are four streams for workers:
The Tourism and Hospitality Stream offers a pathway to permanent residency for eligible workers who have secured job offers from approved employers in specific occupations. To apply, you must be residing in Alberta and hold a valid work permit that includes a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
The Alberta Opportunity Stream targets temporary foreign workers currently employed full-time in Alberta. To qualify, candidates must have a full-time job offer from an Alberta employer in a recognized occupation.
Eligibility requires either a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or a valid work permit that qualifies for an LMIA exemption.
The Alberta Express Entry Stream enables the province to nominate a select number of eligible candidates from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada's (IRCC) Express Entry pool.
To be considered for the Alberta Express Entry Stream, candidates must first receive an invitation to apply. Without this invitation, it is not possible to apply for a nomination through this stream.
Eligibility Criteria for Selection:
The Rural Renewal Stream aims to attract and retain newcomers in rural Alberta, supporting local economic growth through community-driven efforts. It enables rural communities to recruit foreign nationals to live and work locally.
Communities and employers can:
The EMPP is a partnership between Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). Through this stream, refugees are nominated for permanent residency with priority processing.
The Rural Entrepreneur Stream is aimed at supporting economic growth in Alberta’s rural areas. They do so by attracting entrepreneurs. Individuals who wish to launch a new business or acquire an existing one in these communities can apply by submitting an Expression of Interest.
The Graduate Entrepreneur Stream enables the AAIP to nominate eligible international graduates from Alberta’s post-secondary institutions who wish to start or manage a business in the province. This stream provides these graduates with the opportunity to apply for permanent residency in Alberta.
This stream is designed for entrepreneurs with the financial resources and experience in farm management to either launch a new farm or take over an existing one in Alberta.
Applicants must provide a business plan and their application to the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP). The AAIP will review the business plan in consultation with Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation. This will ensure that it is feasible, sustainable, and meets the needs of the agricultural industry in Alberta.
The Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream is an economic immigration pathway. It is aimed at internationally educated graduates who have completed their education outside Canada.
It is tailored for those who wish to start and develop innovative businesses in Alberta. It offers them an opportunity to bring their entrepreneurial ideas to the province.
